Ants Can’t Stand This Simple Trick: Use It to Keep Them Away
If ants keep appearing in your kitchen, you don’t necessarily need a strong chemical spray. One simple option is white vinegar diluted with water.
Why Vinegar Can Help
Ants leave scent trails that help other ants find food and follow the same path. Wiping those trails with a mild vinegar-and-water solution can temporarily disrupt the trail and make the area less attractive.
How to Use It
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and water.
- Put the mixture in a spray bottle or apply it to a cloth.
- Wipe countertops, floors, windowsills, and other places where you see ant trails.
- Repeat as needed.
Important: Vinegar usually doesn’t eliminate the colony. It mainly disrupts the ants’ trails, so they may return if food, water, or an entry point remains.
Keep Ants From Coming Back
- Clean up crumbs and food spills quickly.
- Store food and pet food in sealed containers.
- Keep sinks and counters dry.
- Fix leaking faucets or pipes.
- Seal cracks and openings where ants are entering.
For a persistent infestation, ant bait is generally more effective than simply spraying visible ants, because worker ants can carry bait back to the colony.
Bottom line: Vinegar can be a handy, inexpensive way to disrupt ant trails, but there is no single ingredient that guarantees ants will stay away “for good.” The best results come from combining cleaning, sealing entry points, and appropriate baiting.
