Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

If you’re referring to the viral banana-storage trick, the “one kitchen item” is usually plastic wrap or reusable food wrap—used around the banana stems.

🍌 Why it can help

Bananas naturally release ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening. Much of the ethylene escapes from the stems. Wrapping the stems can slow the movement of ethylene and may modestly extend the bananas’ usable life.

Try this
Keep the bananas together or separate them into individual fruits.
Wrap the stem ends tightly with a small piece of plastic wrap.
Keep the bananas somewhere cool and away from direct sunlight.
Once they’re at your preferred ripeness, putting them in the refrigerator can slow further ripening. The peel may turn brown or black, but the fruit inside can remain good.

One important correction: Don’t expect every banana to last exactly 10 days longer. Ripening varies with temperature, variety, starting ripeness, and storage conditions. Wrapping the stems can help, but it isn’t a guaranteed 10-day extension.

If you want the longest possible storage, freezing peeled, sliced bananas is much more effective for preserving them for later smoothies or baking.
