Crockpot 4‑Ingredient Cabbage and Noodles: Easy Comfort Food

Crockpot 4-Ingredient Cabbage and Noodles: Easy Comfort FoodThis simple slow-cooker dish is a cozy, budget-friendly meal with tender cabbage, buttery noodles, and savory flavor. It’s inspired by classic cabbage-and-noodle dishes found in Central and Eastern European cooking.

Ingredients (serves about 6)

  • 1 large head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 large onion, sliced (optional but adds great flavor)
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • ½ cup butter (or adjust to taste)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

(Optional additions: cooked sausage, bacon, garlic, caraway seeds, or a splash of broth.)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cabbage
    • Chop cabbage into bite-size pieces.
    • Place it in the slow cooker with the sliced onion.
  2. Add butter and seasonings
    • Cut butter into pieces and scatter over the cabbage.
    • Season with salt and pepper.
    • Stir to combine.
  3. Slow cook
    • Cover and cook:
      • Low: 5–6 hours
      • High: 2½–3 hours
    • Stir occasionally if possible, until the cabbage is soft and flavorful.
  4. Cook the noodles
    • Prepare egg noodles separately according to package directions.
    • Drain and stir them into the cooked cabbage mixture before serving.

Optional upgrades

  • Add browned kielbasa or smoked sausage for a heartier meal.
  • Add crispy bacon pieces on top.
  • Use a little garlic or onion powder for extra flavor.
  • Finish with grated Parmesan or a dollop of sour cream.

Tip: Cooking the noodles separately keeps them from becoming mushy in the slow cooker. The cabbage and butter develop a sweet, rich flavor as they cook low and slow.
