Waking up at 3 or 4 a.m. is not a “clear sign” of one specific disease. That claim is commonly used in social-media clickbait.
Occasionally waking at that time is normal. If it happens frequently, possible reasons include:
- Stress or anxiety
- Insomnia or an irregular sleep schedule
- Alcohol or caffeine
- Needing to urinate
- Pain, reflux, or other physical discomfort
- Sleep apnea
- Depression or other mood changes
- Age-related changes in sleep patterns
What matters more is how often it happens and how you feel during the day. Persistent early-morning awakening with significant daytime fatigue, loud snoring/gasping during sleep, or major mood changes deserves medical evaluation.
So, 3–4 a.m. waking by itself is not a reliable diagnostic sign.
