Everyone Should Unplug This Kitchen Appliance Before Going to Sleep
The appliance most often singled out in this warning is the toaster.
A toaster contains exposed heating elements, and accumulated crumbs can ignite. Fire-safety authorities specifically recommend unplugging toasters when they’re not in use and cleaning the crumb tray regularly. (Queensland Fire Department)
🍞 Why a toaster deserves extra attention
Even when you’re finished making toast, the appliance remains connected to electricity. A malfunction, trapped crumbs, or an electrical fault can potentially create a fire hazard. Keeping it away from curtains, paper towels and other combustible materials is also important. (Devon & Somerset Fire Rescue)
Before going to bed
A quick kitchen safety check can include:
- Unplug the toaster and other small appliances that aren’t designed to remain on continuously.
- Make sure the stove and oven are completely off.
- Don’t leave a coffee maker, kettle or other heat-producing appliance running unattended.
- Keep towels, paper and packaging away from cooking surfaces.
- Make sure smoke alarms are working. (GOV.UK)
The U.S. Fire Administration also recommends unplugging small appliances when they’re not being used. (usfa.fema.gov)
Bottom line: You don’t need to unplug your refrigerator or other appliances designed to operate continuously. But a toaster is a sensible appliance to unplug after use, especially overnight.
