Have you noticed small white spots on your arms or legs… and you don’t know what they are?

Small white spots on the arms or legs can have several causes. One common cause, especially in adults, is Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis, which appears as small, smooth white spots on sun-exposed skin and is generally harmless.

Other possibilities include:

  • Vitiligo — larger, well-defined white patches caused by loss of pigment-producing cells.
  • Tinea Versicolor — a fungal infection that can create lighter patches on the skin.
  • Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation — lighter spots that remain after a rash, injury, or skin inflammation heals.

Factors such as the size, shape, location, whether the spots are itchy or scaly, and how long they’ve been present can help narrow down the cause.

If you’d like, you can describe the spots in more detail (or upload a photo), and I can help explain the most likely possibilities. Keep in mind that only a healthcare professional can make a diagnosis.
