Have you noticed small white spots on your arms or legs… and you don’t know what they are?

Small white spots on the skin (especially arms or legs) are pretty common, and there are several possible causes—some harmless, some worth checking.

🟤 Most common causes

1) Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (sun spots)

  • Small white “confetti-like” spots
  • Common on arms and legs in adults over time
  • Caused by long-term sun exposure
  • Harmless, cosmetic only
  • Doesn’t spread aggressively or cause symptoms

2) Tinea versicolor (fungal infection)

  • Caused by a yeast on the skin
  • Can look white, light brown, or patchy
  • Often on chest, back, arms
  • May itch slightly or become more visible after sun exposure
  • Treatable with antifungal creams or shampoos

3) Vitiligo

  • Autoimmune condition where pigment cells are lost
  • White patches that may slowly spread
  • Common on hands, face, elbows, knees
  • Usually not itchy or painful
  • Needs dermatologist diagnosis for confirmation

4) Dry skin / mild eczema

  • Small pale patches, often slightly rough
  • More visible in dry weather
  • Improves with moisturizers

5) Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation

  • Light spots left after injury, rash, insect bite, or acne
  • Skin gradually regains color over time

⚠️ When to see a doctor

You should get checked if:

  • Spots are spreading quickly
  • They become large or form clear patches
  • Hair in the area turns white
  • There is no improvement over weeks/months

🧴 Basic care you can try at home

  • Use sunscreen daily (prevents contrast from worsening)
  • Moisturize regularly
  • Avoid harsh soaps
  • Keep skin hydrated

🧠 Bottom line

Most small white spots are harmless pigment changes or mild fungal issues, but persistent or spreading patches should be evaluated to rule out vitiligo or infections.

If you want, you can describe what the spots look like (flat/raised, itchy or not, size, how long you’ve had them), and I can help narrow it down more accurately.
