Finding unusual-looking poop in your yard can be surprising, but a white substance in or around dog feces can have several possible explanations. It is not always an emergency, but it’s worth checking.
Common possibilities include:
🦴 1. Old or dried dog stool
Dog poop can turn white or gray and chalky as it dries, especially after being exposed to sun and weather. This was more common when dogs ate diets with higher bone content.
🪱 2. Tapeworm segments
Small, white, rice-like pieces in or near stool can be tapeworm segments. They may move when fresh and often appear around the anus or in bedding as well as feces.
🥚 3. Parasite eggs or other intestinal material
Some intestinal parasites can affect stool appearance, though many are not visible to the naked eye.
🧻 4. Something your dog ate
Dogs sometimes ingest unusual items (bones, paper, fabric, plant material), which can appear as strange white pieces.
What you can do:
- Look closely: Is it chalky and hard, like dried material, or soft/moving like small grains of rice?
- Check your dog: Watch for weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting, scooting, a swollen belly, or changes in appetite.
- Bring a fresh stool sample to your veterinarian if you suspect parasites or if your dog has symptoms.
