How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them Fresh Again 🛏️
Pillows collect sweat, body oils, skin cells, and dust over time. Many washable pillows can be cleaned at home, but always check the care label first because washing instructions vary by filling.
🧺 For Machine-Washable Pillows
- Check the label
Make sure the pillow is washable. Memory-foam and some latex pillows generally should not be machine-washed. - Pre-treat obvious stains
Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent to stained areas and gently work it in. - Wash two pillows together
If your machine permits, washing two helps keep the load balanced. - Use detergent and the recommended water temperature
Don’t automatically add bleach or strong whitening chemicals. Follow the pillow manufacturer’s instructions. - Run an extra rinse
This can help remove detergent trapped inside the filling. - Dry completely
This is crucial. A pillow that remains damp inside can develop mold or an unpleasant odor. Use the dryer setting recommended on the label, or air-dry thoroughly if permitted. - Fluff periodically while drying
For suitable pillows, stopping the dryer occasionally and gently fluffing them can help the filling dry evenly.
✨ What About Baking Soda and Vinegar?
Baking soda can help absorb odors, but it’s not a disinfectant or guaranteed whitening treatment. And don’t mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals.
For yellowing caused by sweat and body oils, proper washing and thorough drying are more reliable than viral “miracle” mixtures.
🚫 When to Replace Instead
If a pillow remains lumpy, permanently stained, badly misshapen, or has a persistent musty smell after proper cleaning, replacing it may be more hygienic and comfortable.
