Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Leave Them Fresh and White 🛏️✨

Before washing, check the pillow’s care label. Some pillows—especially memory-foam and latex pillows—shouldn’t go in a washing machine.

For washable pillows
Remove the pillowcase and protector. Wash these separately.
Check for stains. Dab stained areas with a small amount of liquid laundry detergent and let it sit for 10–15 minutes.
Wash two pillows together if your machine allows it. This helps keep the load balanced.
Use a mild detergent and the warmest water permitted by the care label.
Add an oxygen-based laundry whitener if the label permits it and the pillow is white. Avoid chlorine bleach unless the manufacturer specifically says it’s safe.
Run an extra rinse to remove detergent residue.
Dry completely. Tumble-dry on a suitable setting, checking periodically and fluffing the pillows. You can add clean dryer balls to help them regain their shape.
Make absolutely sure they’re dry inside. Damp filling can encourage mold and unpleasant odors.
Air them out in a well-ventilated area after drying.
For a fresher smell

You don’t need perfume or strong fragrances. Complete drying and good ventilation are usually enough to make pillows smell fresh. Avoid soaking pillows with essential oils or household fragrances, particularly if you have sensitive skin or allergies.

Important: If a pillow has persistent mold, a strong musty smell that remains after washing, or damaged filling, replacing it may be safer than repeatedly trying to clean it.
