How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

What people call “inner ear crystals” is usually a condition called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).Inside your inner ear are tiny calcium particles (otoconia). When they move into the wrong canal, they cause spinning dizziness (vertigo) when you turn your head, lie down, or get up.

The good news: in most cases, it can be treated without medicine using specific head movements.

How to remove “ear crystals” (main treatment)

1. Epley Maneuver (most effective)

This is the most common home treatment for BPPV (especially for the right ear).

Steps (right ear example):

  1. Sit on your bed and turn your head 45° to the right
  2. Quickly lie back with your head slightly hanging off the bed
    → hold 30–60 seconds
  3. Turn your head 90° to the left (without lifting it)
    → hold 30–60 seconds
  4. Turn your whole body to the left side (nose pointing down)
    → hold 30–60 seconds
  5. Slowly sit up

👉 This helps move the crystals back into the correct place.

2. Semont maneuver (alternative)

  • Faster head and body movements
  • Often done by a doctor or physiotherapist

3. Brandt-Daroff exercises (for home practice)

  • Sit → lie on one side → sit → lie on other side
  • Repeated several times daily
  • Helps if vertigo keeps coming back

What helps reduce vertigo symptoms

  • Move slowly when getting up or turning your head
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated
  • Avoid sudden bending or looking up for a few days
  • Stay hydrated
  • Rest during active dizziness episodes

When to see a doctor urgently

Get medical help if you have:

  • Severe headache
  • Weakness, numbness, or speech problems
  • Continuous dizziness not triggered by movement
  • Hearing loss or ear pain

These may indicate something other than BPPV.

Important truth

  • “Ear crystals” are not dangerous
  • But they can keep coming back
  • Repositioning exercises usually fix it within 1–3 sessions

If you want, tell me your symptoms (when dizziness happens, how long it lasts, which side triggers it), and I can guide you on the exact maneuver for your case.
