How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

The phrase “inner ear crystals” usually refers to tiny calcium carbonate particles called otoconia that become displaced inside the inner ear. When they move into the wrong part of the balance system, they can cause benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)—a common cause of brief spinning sensations triggered by head movements.

What can help

1. Canalith repositioning maneuvers

  • The most common treatment is a repositioning technique, such as the Epley maneuver, which uses a series of head and body movements to guide the loose crystals back into place.
  • It is often effective, but the correct maneuver depends on which inner-ear canal is affected.
  • A healthcare professional (such as a doctor or vestibular physical therapist) can confirm the diagnosis and teach the correct technique.

2. Move carefully during episodes

  • Sit or lie down when vertigo starts to reduce the risk of falling.
  • Avoid sudden head movements until symptoms improve.

3. Vestibular rehabilitation

  • Specific balance exercises can help some people, especially if dizziness continues after the crystals are repositioned.

Things to know

  • BPPV typically causes short episodes (often seconds to a minute) of spinning triggered by actions like rolling over in bed, looking up, or bending down.
  • It is not usually caused by a problem with the brain, but other conditions can also cause vertigo.

Seek urgent medical care if vertigo comes with:

  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Trouble speaking
  • Severe headache
  • Fainting
  • Chest pain
  • New hearing loss
  • Difficulty walking that is severe or persistent

If you describe:

  1. What triggers the dizziness (turning in bed, standing up, looking up, etc.),
  2. How long each episode lasts, and
  3. Whether you have hearing changes, ringing in the ear, nausea, or imbalance,

I can help you determine whether it sounds like BPPV or another cause of vertigo.
