How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

“Inner ear crystals” usually refers to tiny calcium carbonate particles (otoconia) that become displaced in the inner ear. This condition is called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). When these particles move into the wrong part of the balance system, they can trigger brief episodes of spinning dizziness—often when you turn your head, roll over in bed, look up, or bend down.

Ways to help move the crystals back

1. Epley maneuver (commonly used for BPPV)

  • This is a series of head and body movements designed to guide the particles back into place.
  • It works best when the affected ear is identified first (right vs. left), and the technique depends on that side.
  • A healthcare professional or physical therapist can confirm the diagnosis and teach the correct version.

2. Vestibular rehabilitation exercises

  • A vestibular therapist can provide exercises to improve balance and reduce dizziness, especially if symptoms keep returning.

3. Move carefully during episodes

  • Sit or lie down when dizziness starts to avoid falls.
  • Rise slowly from bed.
  • Avoid sudden head movements until symptoms improve.

What usually does not fix BPPV

  • “Ear cleansing” or putting oils/drops in the ear does not remove inner ear crystals.
  • Supplements and detox remedies have not been shown to reposition the crystals.

See a healthcare professional promptly if:

  • Vertigo is new and severe or lasts continuously for hours or days
  • You have weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, severe headache, chest pain, or vision changes
  • You have new hearing loss or severe ear pain
  • You are at risk of falls

If you tell me:

  1. your age,
  2. whether the dizziness feels like spinning,
  3. what triggers it (rolling in bed, looking up, standing, etc.), and
  4. whether it affects the right or left side,

I can help you figure out whether it sounds like BPPV and which maneuver is usually considered.
