How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

What people call “inner ear crystals” are usually small calcium particles in the inner ear that get displaced. The medical condition is called:Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)It’s one of the most common causes of vertigo (spinning sensation).

What actually helps (evidence-based)

1. Repositioning maneuvers (main treatment)

These are specific head movements that move the “crystals” back where they belong.

Most common: Epley maneuver

  • Very effective for many cases of BPPV
  • Can often relieve symptoms within days

It is usually done for the affected ear and canal, ideally guided by a clinician or physiotherapist the first time.

Other maneuvers:

  • Semont maneuver
  • Brandt-Daroff exercises (home exercise option)

2. What you should avoid during an attack

  • Sudden head movements
  • Bending down quickly
  • Lying flat immediately after dizziness starts
  • Driving if symptoms are active

3. Medicines (limited role)

Doctors may sometimes prescribe:

  • Short-term anti-vertigo medicines (for nausea only)

But these:

  • Do NOT fix the crystal problem
  • Are only for symptom relief

4. When to see a doctor urgently

Vertigo is NOT always BPPV. Get medical help if you have:

  • Severe headache
  • Weakness, numbness, or slurred speech
  • Double vision
  • Hearing loss in one ear
  • Continuous dizziness not triggered by head movement

These could suggest other conditions like stroke or inner ear disease.

5. Good news

  • BPPV is benign (not dangerous)
  • Often improves with simple maneuvers
  • Can recur but is treatable again

Bottom line

There is no medicine that “dissolves crystals.” The most effective treatment is specific head repositioning exercises like the Epley maneuver, which physically moves the particles back into place.

If you want, tell me:

  • When your dizziness happens (turning in bed, standing, etc.)
  • Which side feels worse

I can guide you step-by-step for the correct maneuver.
