How to Get Rid of Milia: Those Annoying Fat Cysts

How to Get Rid of Milia (Tiny White Bumps)

Milia are small, white or yellowish bumps that commonly appear around the eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead. Despite sometimes being called “fat cysts,” they are not filled with fat. They are tiny cysts containing keratin, a protein found in skin, hair, and nails.

What Causes Milia?

Milia form when keratin becomes trapped beneath the skin’s surface. They can occur:

  • In newborns (very common and usually harmless)
  • In children and adults
  • After skin injury, burns, or some cosmetic procedures
  • Sometimes without any obvious cause

Can You Remove Milia at Home?

Avoid squeezing or popping them

Unlike pimples, milia usually do not have an opening to the skin surface. Trying to squeeze them can:

  • Damage the skin
  • Cause infection
  • Lead to scarring

Gentle exfoliation

Using mild chemical exfoliants (such as products containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid) may help prevent new milia in some people, but they often won’t remove existing ones.

Retinoids

For some adults, topical retinoids may help reduce the formation of new milia. They should be used according to product directions and may not be suitable during pregnancy or for sensitive skin.

Professional Removal

If milia are persistent or bothersome, a dermatologist or other trained healthcare professional can remove them using sterile techniques, such as:

  • A tiny sterile needle or blade to open the surface
  • Gentle extraction of the keratin plug

This is generally quick and minimizes the risk of scarring when done properly.

How to Help Prevent Milia

  • Cleanse your face gently each day.
  • Avoid heavy, greasy skincare products if they seem to contribute.
  • Exfoliate gently if appropriate for your skin type.
  • Wear sunscreen daily to help protect your skin
