How to remove scratches from glasses and restore their new, shiny appearance: a simple recipe

A “simple recipe” for removing scratches from glasses sounds appealing, but the honest reality is: there is no safe DIY method that fully restores scratched eyeglass lenses to brand-new condition, especially if they have coatings like anti-reflective or blue-light filters.

What you can do depends on how deep the scratches are and what type of lenses you have.

First: Know what you’re working with

Most modern eyeglasses use:

  • Plastic/polycarbonate lenses (most common)
  • Often with coatings (anti-glare, UV, scratch-resistant)

⚠️ These coatings are very thin. Once scratched, they usually cannot be repaired—only replaced.

Safe “Simple Method” (for very light haze or micro-scratches)

Step 1: Clean properly (this fixes many “fake scratches”)

  • Rinse with lukewarm water
  • Add a drop of mild dish soap
  • Rub gently with fingers
  • Dry with a microfiber cloth

Sometimes what looks like scratches is just oil or dust buildup.

Step 2: Microfiber polishing

  • Use a clean microfiber cloth
  • Gently rub in circular motion for 1–2 minutes

This can slightly improve clarity for very fine marks.

Common “home recipes” (use with caution)

1. Toothpaste method (risky)

Only for uncoated plastic lenses (rare today)

How people try it:

  • Use non-gel, non-whitening toothpaste
  • Apply a tiny amount
  • Rub very gently for 10–20 seconds
  • Rinse thoroughly

⚠️ Risks:

  • Can destroy anti-reflective coating
  • Can make lenses worse or cloudy

2. Baking soda paste (also risky)

  • Mix baking soda + water into a thin paste
  • Rub very gently with microfiber cloth
  • Rinse well

⚠️ Same issue: may damage coatings and usually does not remove real scratches.

What DOESN’T work (despite viral claims)

These are commonly shared online but are ineffective or harmful:

  • Furniture polish
  • Vinegar
  • Banana peel
  • Olive oil or petroleum jelly (temporary illusion only)
  • Glass cleaners with abrasives

They may make lenses look shinier briefly but do not repair scratches.

The truth about scratched glasses

  • If scratches are light surface marks, cleaning may help
  • If scratches are visible while wearing them, they are permanent
  • If coating is damaged, it cannot be restored at home
