Headlines like “If you are getting these pimples on your lips or intimate area, it is because…” are usually oversimplified. Bumps or pimples in these areas can have many different causes, and it’s not possible to determine the reason from location alone.
If the bumps are on the lips (mouth area)
Possible causes include:
- Acne
- Irritated hair follicles
- Cold sores caused by Herpes Simplex Virus Infection
- Canker sores (which occur inside the mouth rather than on the skin)
- Allergic or irritant reactions to cosmetics, toothpaste, or lip products
- Harmless enlarged oil glands (Fordyce spots)
If the bumps are in the genital area
Possible causes include:
- Ingrown hairs
- Folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles)
- Acne-like lesions
- Cysts
- Friction or irritation from shaving
- Sexually transmitted infections, including Genital Herpes
- Human Papillomavirus Infection causing genital warts
- Other skin conditions such as eczema or hidradenitis suppurativa
When to seek medical attention
Consider seeing a healthcare professional if the bumps:
- Are painful, recurrent, or spreading
- Contain pus or drain fluid
- Are associated with fever or swollen lymph nodes
- Appear after a new sexual contact
- Do not improve within a few weeks
- Are accompanied by ulcers, blisters, or significant itching
Important note
A bump on the lips and a bump in the genital area are not automatically caused by the same thing. While some infections can affect both areas, many common causes are unrelated and harmless.
