💅 If You Have These Lines on Your Nails, Pay Attention
Nail lines and ridges are often harmless, especially as we get older. But the type of line matters. A nail change by itself usually cannot diagnose a disease. (American Academy of Dermatology)
1. Vertical lines running from cuticle to tip
These are very common, particularly with aging, and usually aren’t something to worry about. Dry or brittle nails can make them more noticeable. (American Academy of Dermatology)
2. Horizontal grooves across the nail
Deep grooves running across the nail are called Beau’s lines. They can appear when nail growth is temporarily interrupted—for example, after a significant illness, fever, injury, major physical stress, or chemotherapy. (American Academy of Dermatology)
If several nails suddenly develop pronounced horizontal grooves and you don’t know why, it’s worth discussing with a doctor or dermatologist.
3. Dark brown or black streak
A new or changing dark streak under a fingernail or toenail should be examined by a dermatologist. Most aren’t melanoma, but melanoma can sometimes appear as a dark line beneath a nail, so it shouldn’t simply be ignored. (American Academy of Dermatology)
4. Tiny red or brown lines
Short reddish-brown or black lines beneath the nail can be splinter hemorrhages, often caused by minor trauma. If you don’t remember injuring the nail, particularly if multiple nails are affected or you have other symptoms, seek medical advice. (American Academy of Dermatology)
5. Ridges accompanied by other nail changes
Ridges combined with brittleness, discoloration, nail lifting, pitting, or changes in nail shape may sometimes occur with conditions such as psoriasis, thyroid disease, fungal infections, or iron deficiency. (American Academy of Dermatology)
🚨 When to have your nails checked
See a healthcare professional if you notice a new unexplained nail change, especially a changing dark streak, deep horizontal grooves without an obvious cause, nail separation, significant discoloration, or changes affecting several nails.
Bottom line: Don’t panic when you see lines on your nails. Vertical ridges are usually harmless; new, deep, horizontal, dark, or rapidly changing lines deserve more attention.
