Laundry as white and pure as milk: you only need this ingredient

“Laundry as white and pure as milk: you only need this ingredient” — what actually works?

If the viral post is referring to baking soda, it can help make white laundry look fresher, but it doesn’t actually bleach fabric white. It mainly helps with odors, water chemistry and detergent performance.

🧂 Try baking soda this way

For a normal load of white clothes:

  1. Put your usual laundry detergent in the washer.
  2. Add about ½ cup (120 mL) of baking soda directly to the wash water/drum—not the detergent dispenser, which can clog.
  3. Wash using the warmest temperature permitted by the garment’s care label.
  4. Dry whites in sunlight when practical; sunlight can naturally brighten freshly washed fabrics.

🌟 For seriously gray or yellow whites

Oxygen-based bleach is generally more effective than baking soda for actually lifting discoloration. Follow the product directions and the garment’s care label; wool and silk, for example, may not be suitable.

⚠️ Don’t fall for the “one ingredient = miracle” claim

Avoid mixing random laundry chemicals. In particular, never mix vinegar with oxygen bleach, hydrogen peroxide or chlorine bleach, as dangerous reactions can occur.

Bottom line: Baking soda is a useful, gentle laundry booster, but if your goal is truly bright white rather than simply fresher-looking, an appropriate oxygen-based whitening product is more effective.
