Leg Cramps at Night: What You Should Know

Nighttime leg cramps are sudden, painful muscle tightening, often affecting the calf or foot. They are common and usually harmless, but frequent cramps can sometimes have an underlying cause.

Common causes include:

  • Muscle fatigue or overuse
  • Long periods of sitting or standing
  • Dehydration
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain medications
  • Nerve or circulation problems

What to do when a cramp starts

Gently stretch and massage the affected muscle. For a calf cramp, slowly straighten the leg and pull the toes toward you. Carefully standing or walking may also help.

Regular gentle stretching, staying hydrated, and avoiding sudden increases in exercise may help prevent future cramps.

Don’t automatically assume you need magnesium or other supplements. Cramps have many possible causes, and supplements are not appropriate for everyone.

Seek medical advice if cramps are frequent, severe, worsening, or accompanied by swelling, weakness, numbness, or changes in skin color.

Most nighttime leg cramps are manageable—but persistent cramps deserve attention.
