My neighbor taught me this trick to clean green algae off siding with 0 effort. Here’s how it works

Easy Way to Remove Green Algae From Siding

If you’re talking about the common DIY trick, it usually involves a diluted oxygen bleach solution or a gentle siding-safe cleaner, followed by rinsing. The “zero effort” claim is mostly clickbait—you’ll still need to apply the solution and rinse the surface.

🧽 A simple method

  1. Wet the siding with a garden hose.
  2. Mix an oxygen-bleach cleaner according to its label and apply it to the algae-covered area.
  3. Let it sit for the time recommended on the product—don’t let it dry on the siding.
  4. Gently scrub stubborn areas with a soft-bristle brush.
  5. Rinse thoroughly from top to bottom.
  6. Repeat on heavy growth if necessary.

⚠️ Protect your siding and plants

  • Test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first.
  • Protect nearby plants and rinse them with water before and after cleaning.
  • Avoid aggressive pressure washing, especially on vinyl siding, because water can be forced behind the siding.
  • Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners.

For prevention, trim vegetation that keeps the siding shaded and damp and improve drainage/air circulation around the wall.

Bottom line: A siding-safe cleaner + dwell time + thorough rinsing is usually much safer than trying to blast algae off with very high pressure.
