Nighttime Bathroom Trips Could Be a Sign of These Health Issues

Waking up once during the night to urinate can be normal, and nighttime urination often becomes more common with age. But frequent or newly increased nighttime trips can sometimes point to an underlying problem.

Possible causes include:

  1. Diabetes
High blood sugar can increase thirst and urine production, leading to more frequent urination.
  2. Urinary tract infection (UTI)
A UTI may cause frequent or urgent urination, often accompanied by burning, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or pelvic discomfort.
  3. Enlarged prostate
In men, an enlarged prostate can interfere with bladder emptying and cause frequent nighttime urination.
  4. Overactive bladder
A bladder that contracts too frequently can cause urgency, frequent urination, and sometimes leakage.
  5. Heart problems and leg swelling
Fluid that accumulates in the legs during the day can return to the bloodstream when lying down, increasing urine production overnight.
  6. Certain medications
Diuretics (“water pills”), commonly prescribed for blood pressure and heart conditions, increase urine production and can contribute to nighttime trips depending on when they’re taken. Don’t change the timing or stop a medication without medical advice.
  7. Sleep problems
Sometimes people wake because of insomnia, pain, or another sleep disturbance and then use the bathroom simply because they’re already awake
