No More Rotten or Black Bananas? Here’s What Really Works
The viral claim that one method will keep bananas fresh for 2 years is false. Fresh bananas cannot be stored at room temperature for that long. However, you can significantly extend their shelf life with proper storage.
1. Wrap the stems 🍌
Cover the banana stems with plastic wrap or aluminum foil to slow the release of ethylene gas, which speeds ripening.
2. Keep them separate
Store bananas away from apples, avocados, and tomatoes, as these fruits also produce ethylene gas.
3. Store at room temperature
Keep bananas in a cool, dry place until they’re ripe. Avoid direct sunlight.
4. Refrigerate once ripe
After bananas are ripe, refrigerate them:
- The peel will turn dark, but the fruit inside usually stays fresh for several more days.
5. Freeze for long-term storage
Peel ripe bananas, slice them if desired, and freeze them in an airtight bag or container.
Frozen bananas are best used within 2–6 months for the best quality, though they remain safe to eat longer if continuously frozen.
Extra tip
If bananas ripen faster than you can eat them, use them in:
- Smoothies
