One vitamin that opens blood vessels and improves circulation

The idea that one vitamin can “open blood vessels” and dramatically improve circulation is a common health claim, but no single vitamin works like a medication that widens arteries instantly. However, some vitamins are important for healthy blood vessel function and normal circulation.

Vitamin that is often linked with blood vessel health: Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps the body produce collagen, a protein that supports the structure of blood vessel walls. It also acts as an antioxidant and may help maintain normal blood vessel function.

Other vitamins and nutrients involved in circulation

  • Vitamin B12
Helps make healthy red blood cells and supports nerve function. A deficiency can contribute to anemia, fatigue, and numbness or tingling.
  • Vitamin B6 and folate (B9)
Help with red blood cell production and normal metabolism of homocysteine, a compound associated with blood vessel health when present at high levels.
  • Vitamin D
Plays roles in overall cardiovascular health, though supplements improve circulation mainly when someone is deficient.
  • Vitamin E
Has antioxidant properties, but high-dose supplements are not recommended for everyone and may carry risks.

Foods that support circulation

  • Citrus fruits, berries, and peppers (vitamin C)
  • Fish, eggs, dairy, and fortified foods (B12)
  • Leafy greens and beans (folate)
  • Nuts and seeds (vitamin E)
  • Regular physical activity, especially walking, is also one of the strongest ways to support healthy circulation
