PUT VICKS VAPORUB ON THIS PLACE ON YOUR BODY EVERY NIGHT BEFORE SLEEPING. HERE ARE THE AMAZING EFFECTS

Despite viral online hacks claiming that putting Vicks VapoRub on your skin every night can magically erase wrinkles, clear acne, or fade dark spots, dermatologists strongly advise against using Vicks as a skincare treatment.

Vicks VapoRub is an over-the-counter medication formulated strictly as a topical cough suppressant and a temporary muscle/joint ache reliever.

What’s Actually Inside Vicks VapoRub?

The ointment relies on a heavy petroleum jelly base mixed with active medicinal ingredients:

  • Camphor (4.8%)

  • Menthol (2.6%)

  • Eucalyptus Oil (1.2%)

While these ingredients create a comforting sensory and cooling effect for chest congestion or sore muscles, they behave very differently when applied to sensitive skin or used overnight on the face or body.

Why Putting Vicks on Your Skin Can Backfire

  • Risk of Chemical Irritation: Ingredients like camphor and menthol are potent counter-irritants. When left on the skin overnight, they frequently cause contact dermatitis, redness, burning, and inflammation.

  • Clogged Pores: The thick petrolatum (petroleum jelly) base is heavy and occlusive. Applied regularly to acne-prone areas or the face, it can trap dirt, oil, and bacteria, triggering breakouts.

  • No Proven Anti-Aging or Spot-Fading Properties: Vicks does not target melanin (the cause of dark spots) or stimulate collagen in a way that treats skin aging. Any perceived tightness or temporary “glow” is often just mild swelling and irritation from the menthol.

  • Toxicity Concerns: Camphor can be toxic if absorbed in large amounts through broken skin or mucous membranes, and it must never be used near the eyes or ingested.

What to Use Instead

If you are trying to treat a specific skin concern, skip the medicine cabinet chest rub and use targeted, tested skincare ingredients:

  • For Dry Skin / Cracked Heels: Plain petroleum jelly (Vaseline) works wonderfully to lock in moisture without the added irritating essential oils and camphor.

  • For Dark Spots or Age Spots: Look for Vitamin C, Niacinamide, or chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid.

  • For Muscle Aches: Using Vicks on your chest or back for a cold is what it was designed for—just keep it away from your face and broken skin.
