A sebaceous cyst (more accurately called an Epidermoid cyst) is a slow-growing, harmless lump under the skin filled with keratin (a protein from skin cells). Despite the name, it is not actually caused by oil glands in most cases.
These cysts are usually benign, but they can become inflamed or infected.
🔍 Main causes
Epidermoid cysts form when skin cells get trapped under the skin instead of shedding normally.
Common causes include:
1. Blocked hair follicles
Dead skin cells get trapped inside a pore or follicle.
2. Skin injury or irritation
Cuts, acne, or trauma can push skin cells deeper under the skin.
3. Acne-prone skin
People with oily or acne-prone skin are more likely to develop them.
4. Genetic tendency
Some people are simply more prone to cyst formation.
5. Hormonal changes
Can increase skin cell turnover and blockage risk.
⚠️ Symptoms
- Small round lump under the skin
- Moves slightly when touched
- Usually painless
- May have a tiny central “black dot”
- Can become red, swollen, or painful if infected
🏠 Home care (safe management)
There is no true home cure that removes the cyst permanently, but you can manage symptoms:
✔ Warm compress
- Apply for 10–15 minutes, 2–3 times daily
- Helps reduce discomfort and may encourage drainage if inflamed
✔ Keep area clean
- Wash gently with mild soap
- Avoid irritation
✔ Avoid squeezing or popping
This is very important because it can lead to:
- Infection
- Scarring
- Recurrence
❌ Common myths (not effective)
- Toothpaste, turmeric pastes, or herbal mixtures
- Oils or acidic home remedies
- Squeezing to “remove the core”
These do not remove the cyst wall, so the lump usually returns.
🩺 Medical treatment (definitive solution)
If the cyst is bothersome, doctors may:
- Remove it surgically (best long-term solution)
- Drain it if infected (temporary relief)
- Prescribe antibiotics if there is infection
Complete removal of the cyst wall prevents recurrence.
🚨 When to see a doctor
Seek medical help if:
- It becomes painful or red
- It grows quickly
- It leaks pus or blood
- It keeps coming back
