Take two tablespoons in the morning and say goodbye to bone pain, nerve problems, cartilage wear, anxiety, depression and insomnia.

“Take Two Tablespoons in the Morning and Say Goodbye to Bone Pain…” — Is It True?

No. This is a classic miracle-remedy claim. The wording promises one remedy will eliminate bone pain, nerve problems, cartilage damage, anxiety, depression and insomnia—all conditions with very different causes. There is no good evidence that taking two tablespoons of one substance can cure all of them. (TukTuk Food)

Some versions of this headline appear to be referring to magnesium. Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in nerve, muscle and bone function, but that doesn’t mean a large spoonful will repair damaged cartilage or treat depression, anxiety, insomnia and nerve disease simultaneously. What magnesium can—and can’t—do

  • Bone health: Magnesium contributes to normal bone function, but supplementation isn’t a universal treatment for bone pain.
  • Nerves and muscles: Magnesium is important for normal nerve and muscle function, but neuropathy requires finding and treating its underlying cause.
  • Sleep: Evidence for magnesium supplements as a treatment for insomnia is limited; they’re not a substitute for evaluating persistent sleep problems.
  • Anxiety/depression: These conditions require proper assessment and evidence-based treatment rather than relying on a spoonful of a supplement.
  • Cartilage wear: Magnesium does not rebuild worn-out cartilage. Osteoarthritis involves changes to cartilage, bone and other joint tissues and generally requires a broader treatment approach. (NIAMS)

⚠️ Don’t take “two tablespoons” literally

Supplements are normally dosed in milligrams, not tablespoons. Two tablespoons of a particular product could represent a very different amount depending on its formulation, and excessive magnesium from supplements can cause diarrhea and other problems and can be dangerous in people with impaired kidney function.

Bottom line: There is no credible evidence that a two-tablespoon morning remedy can make bone pain, nerve problems, cartilage wear, anxiety, depression and insomnia disappear. If you have unexplained bone pain, don’t simply treat it with a supplement—persistent unexplained bone pain deserves medical evaluation. (medlineplus.gov)
