If you’re dealing with mildew on shower silicone (the caulk around the tub or shower), the fastest effective approach depends on whether it’s just surface mildew or has penetrated the silicone.
- For surface mildew: Apply a bathroom mold remover or a diluted bleach solution (never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners). Let it sit for 10–30 minutes according to the product directions, then scrub gently with a soft brush or old toothbrush and rinse thoroughly. Good ventilation and gloves are recommended.
- If the black stains don’t come off: The mildew has likely grown into the silicone itself. In that case, cleaning won’t restore its original appearance. The fastest long-term fix is to remove the old silicone and apply new mildew-resistant bathroom silicone.
To help prevent mildew from returning:
- Wipe down the shower after use.
- Run an exhaust fan or open a window to reduce humidity.
- Repair leaks that keep the silicone damp.
Be cautious of videos claiming a “magic” one-step solution that permanently restores heavily stained silicone. While some cleaners can remove surface mold quickly, they generally cannot remove mold that has penetrated the silicone. Replacing the affected silicone is often the only way to eliminate deep staining.
