The claim “This burns weeds in 1 day! They never grow again” is a common gardening headline, but it is misleading. Most weed-killing methods do not permanently prevent weeds from ever returning because new weeds can grow from seeds already in the soil, wind-blown seeds, or nearby plants.
Some methods that can kill weeds quickly:
- Boiling water: Can kill the leaves and stems of many small weeds on contact, especially in cracks and paths. It usually does not kill deep roots.
- Hand pulling (with the root removed): Often the most reliable for long-term control of individual weeds.
- Mulch (2–4 inches thick): Helps block sunlight and prevent many new weeds from sprouting.
- Vinegar-based weed killers: Can burn the visible parts of weeds, but many perennial weeds regrow because roots remain alive. Strong vinegar products can also harm nearby plants and soil organisms.
For fewer weeds over time:
- Remove weeds before they produce seeds.
- Keep soil covered with mulch or ground-cover plants.
- Improve lawn or garden density so weeds have less space to establish.
If you mean weeds in a lawn, driveway cracks, garden beds, or a large area, the best approach is different.
