A very dirty mop often doesn’t need to be thrown away. The “secret ingredient” in many cleaning tips is usually white vinegar or baking soda, but the best choice depends on what is making the mop dirty.
Method 1: Deep clean with white vinegar
For: odors, greasy buildup, and general grime
- Rinse the mop head with warm water to remove loose dirt.
- Fill a bucket with:
- Warm water
- About 1 cup of white vinegar
- Soak the mop head for 30–60 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely (preferably in sunlight).
Method 2: Use baking soda for smells and buildup
- Fill a bucket with warm water.
- Add:
- ½ cup baking soda
- Soak the mop head for about an hour.
- Rinse well and air dry.
Method 3: For heavily soiled microfiber mop heads
- Wash them separately in the washing machine (if the label allows).
- Avoid fabric softener, which can coat microfiber fibers and reduce cleaning ability.
Important safety note
Never mix vinegar and bleach—the combination can create dangerous fumes.
To keep a mop cleaner longer:
✅ Rinse it after every use
✅ Let it dry fully before storing
