Weak or Brittle Nails: What Your Body May Be Trying to Tell You

Weak or brittle nails are common and are often caused by everyday factors rather than a serious illness. However, persistent changes in your nails can sometimes be a clue to an underlying health condition.

1. Frequent Exposure to Water or Chemicals

Repeated handwashing, dishwashing, or use of cleaning products can dry out nails, making them more likely to split or peel.

What can help:

  • Wear gloves when cleaning or washing dishes.
  • Apply hand cream and cuticle moisturizer regularly.

2. Nutritional Deficiencies

Nails need a variety of nutrients to grow normally. In some cases, brittle nails may be associated with low levels of:

  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Biotin (rare)
  • Protein

Rather than taking supplements on your own, it’s best to talk with a healthcare professional if you suspect a deficiency.

3. Aging

As people age, nails often become drier and more brittle. This is a normal part of aging for many individuals.

4. Thyroid Disorders

Both an underactive and, less commonly, an overactive thyroid can affect nail growth and strength. If brittle nails occur along with fatigue, weight changes, or changes in hair or skin, a medical evaluation may be appropriate.

5. Skin Conditions

Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can affect the nails, leading to:

  • Pitting
  • Cracking
  • Thickening
  • Separation from the nail bed

6. Iron Deficiency

Low iron levels can sometimes cause thin, brittle, or spoon-shaped nails. A blood test can determine whether iron deficiency is present.
