What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

Many social media posts claim there is a different “normal” blood pressure for each age. In reality, there is no separate normal blood pressure target for healthy adults based solely on age. Although blood pressure tends to rise with age, higher values are not considered normal just because someone is older.

Blood pressure categories for adults

Category Systolic (top number) Diastolic (bottom number)
Normal Less than 120 Less than 80
Elevated 120–129 Less than 80
High blood pressure (Stage 1) 130–139 80–89
High blood pressure (Stage 2) 140 or higher 90 or higher
Hypertensive crisis* 180 or higher 120 or higher

*If a reading is 180/120 mmHg or higher, especially with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, severe headache, or vision changes, seek emergency medical care.

What about children?

Normal blood pressure in children does vary by age, sex, and height, so pediatric healthcare providers use specialized charts rather than a single number.

Tips for an accurate reading

  • Sit quietly for at least 5 minutes before measuring.
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor and your back supported.
  • Rest your arm at heart level.
  • Avoid caffeine, smoking, and exercise for about 30 minutes before checking.
  • Take readings at the same time each day if you’re monitoring at home.

One high reading doesn’t necessarily mean you have hypertension. Blood pressure naturally changes throughout the day, so diagnosis is usually based on multiple readings over time.

If you tell me your age and your blood pressure reading (for example, 128/82), I can help explain what it means.
