10 Warning Signs of a Blood Clot in the Leg You Should Know
A blood clot in a deep vein, called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), can be serious because part of the clot can travel to the lungs. Knowing the warning signs can help you seek treatment quickly.
1. Swelling in One Leg
One leg may suddenly become noticeably more swollen than the other.
2. Leg Pain or Tenderness
Pain or tenderness, especially in the calf or thigh, can occur without an obvious injury.
3. Warmth
The affected area may feel warmer than the surrounding skin.
4. Red or Darkened Skin
The skin over the affected area may become red, purple, or darker than usual.
5. A Heavy or Aching Feeling
The leg may feel unusually heavy, tight, or achy.
6. Pain That Gets Worse When Standing
Discomfort may become more noticeable when walking or standing.
7. Swelling That Develops Quickly
Sudden swelling in one leg deserves prompt medical attention.
8. Enlarged or Tender Veins
Veins near the skin may become more noticeable or painful.
9. Unexplained Calf Discomfort
Persistent calf discomfort without a clear cause should not be ignored, particularly when combined with swelling.
10. Symptoms With No Obvious Injury
Leg symptoms that appear unexpectedly are worth getting checked, especially if several signs occur together.
Important: DVT can sometimes cause few or no symptoms, and these signs can also have other causes. Only medical evaluation can determine whether a clot is present.
