7 Medications That Can Affect Memory and Cognition—Especially in Older Adults

Most of these medicines do not directly cause permanent dementia or “brain damage.” However, some medications can cause confusion, delirium, sedation, or cognitive impairment, and prolonged exposure to certain drug classes has been associated with greater cognitive decline in older adults.

1. Anticholinergic medications

5. Certain antipsychotic medications

They can cause sedation, movement problems, falls, and other serious adverse effects. FDA warnings also address increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.

6. Some older antidepressants

Certain tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline, have substantial anticholinergic effects. In susceptible older adults, this can contribute to confusion and cognitive problems.

That doesn’t mean someone taking one of these medicines has developed dementia. The medication’s benefits and risks need to be considered individually.
