Fall Awakening: Breathing Life into House Flowers with a Little Secret

Fall Awakening: Breathing Life into House Flowers with a Little Secret

As autumn arrives, many houseplants respond to shorter days and cooler temperatures by slowing their growth. Leaves may look less vibrant, flowering can decrease, and plants that were thriving in summer may suddenly seem tired.

The good news is that autumn is an excellent time to adjust your care routine rather than trying to force rapid growth.

🌿 The “little secret”: light

For many indoor flowering plants, adequate light is more important than a homemade fertilizer or miracle ingredient.

As daylight becomes weaker and shorter, move plants closer to a bright window while avoiding harsh, direct sunlight that could scorch sensitive leaves.

đź’§ Adjust your watering

Plants generally use less water as growth slows. Don’t continue watering on the same summer schedule.

Instead:

  • Check the soil before watering.
  • Water thoroughly when the plant actually needs it.
  • Make sure excess water can drain away.
  • Never allow the pot to sit permanently in standing water.

Overwatering during the cooler months is a common way to stress indoor plants.

🌱 What about fertilizer?

Don’t automatically increase fertilizer because a plant looks weak. If the plant is actively growing or flowering, a properly formulated houseplant fertilizer used according to its label can provide useful nutrients.

But fertilizer cannot compensate for insufficient light, poor drainage, or incorrect watering
