Homemade floor cleaner: with this mixture your floor will look like new.

A homemade floor cleaner can work well for routine cleaning, but the right recipe depends on your floor type. Some popular internet mixtures can damage wood, natural stone, or certain finishes.

Simple Homemade Floor Cleaner (for most sealed tile, vinyl, and laminate floors)

Mix:

  • 1 gallon (3.8 liters) warm water
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • A few drops of mild dish soap (optional)

Use a well-wrung mop rather than soaking the floor, then let it air dry.

For Sealed Hardwood Floors

  • Use plain water with a cleaner specifically recommended by the flooring manufacturer, or a small amount of pH-neutral wood floor cleaner.
  • Avoid excessive water, vinegar, ammonia, or steam unless the manufacturer says they’re safe, as these can dull or damage some finishes over time.

For Natural Stone (Marble, Granite, Slate, etc.)

  • Use warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
  • Do not use vinegar or other acidic cleaners, which can etch and permanently damage many stone surfaces.

Tips for a Like-New Shine

  • Sweep or vacuum first to remove grit that can scratch the floor.
  • Mop with a damp—not soaking wet—mop.
  • Change the cleaning solution if it becomes dirty.
  • Buff dry with a microfiber mop or cloth for extra shine.

A clean, shiny floor depends as much on using the right cleaner for the flooring material as it does on the cleaning technique. Using harsh or acidic homemade mixtures on the wrong surface can cause more harm than good.
