How to Remove and Clean the Washing Machine Filter Box (Lint/Dirt Filter)

Many washing machines have a lint filter, debris filter, or drain filter designed to catch dirt, lint, hair, and small objects during washing. If these filters become clogged, they may reduce cleaning performance and can contribute to unpleasant odors or residue on clothes.

The exact location and removal method depend on the washing machine brand and model, but these are common steps:

1. Turn Off the Washing Machine

• Switch off the power.
• Unplug the machine for safety.
• If it is a front-loading machine, have a towel ready because some water may come out.

2. Find the Filter Location

Common locations:

Top-loading washing machines

• Inside the drum, usually attached to the side wall or under the agitator area.
• Some models have a small removable lint filter panel.

Front-loading washing machines

• Usually behind a small access door at the bottom front of the machine.
• This is often called the pump filter or drain filter.

3. Remove the Filter

For a removable lint filter:

1. Open the filter cover or pull the filter upward/outward.
2. Remove any trapped lint and debris.
3. If it has a mesh screen, detach it carefully if designed to be removed.

For a front drain filter:

1. Open the small bottom access panel.
2. Place a towel or shallow container underneath.
3. Drain any remaining water (if your model has a small drain hose).
4. Turn the filter cap counterclockwise and pull it out.

4. Clean the Filter

• Rinse it under running water.
• Use a soft brush (such as an old toothbrush) to remove buildup.
• Remove hair, lint, and trapped dirt.
• Check the filter opening for coins, buttons, or other objects.

Avoid using harsh brushes that may damage fine mesh.

5. Reinstall the Filter

• Place the filter back in its original position.
• For screw-type filters, turn clockwise until secure.
• Make sure it is properly seated to prevent leaks.
• Close the cover.

6. Test the Machine

Run a short rinse cycle and check:

• No leaks
• Normal water drainage
• No unusual noises
