If you are alone and choking (unable to breathe because food or an object is blocking your airway), quick action matters.
If you can still cough or make sounds:
- Cough forcefully. A strong cough is often the best way to clear the blockage.
- Do not put your fingers in your throat unless you can clearly see and remove the object.
If you cannot breathe, speak, or cough effectively:
- Call emergency services if you can (use speaker mode if possible).
- Perform self-abdominal thrusts (self-Heimlich maneuver):
- Make a fist and place it just above your belly button.
- Hold your fist with your other hand.
- Pull inward and upward sharply.
- Repeat until the object comes out.
- If that does not work:
- Lean your upper abdomen against a firm object with an edge (such as the back of a sturdy chair or countertop).
- Press inward and upward repeatedly to create thrusts.
If you become unconscious:
Emergency responders are needed. If someone is nearby, they should call for help and begin appropriate first aid.
Important: This applies to choking from a blocked airway. If you mean a different kind of “suffocating” feeling (such as asthma, panic, heart problems, or breathing difficulty), the response is different and may require urgent medical attention.
