What Is Normal Blood Pressure at Different Ages?
Many people believe that blood pressure should naturally be higher as they get older. But for adults, there isn’t a separate “normal” blood-pressure number for each age.
Adult Blood Pressure Guide
- Normal: Below 120/80 mmHg
- Elevated: 120–129 and below 80
- Stage 1 high blood pressure: 130–139 or 80–89
- Stage 2 high blood pressure: 140 or higher or 90 or higher
These categories apply to adults, including older adults. Your personal treatment goal may differ depending on your health and medical history.
Why One Reading Isn’t Enough
Blood pressure changes throughout the day. Stress, exercise, caffeine, illness, and even talking during a measurement can affect the result.
For a more accurate home reading, rest quietly for about five minutes, sit properly, and take more than one reading.
Important: A reading above 180/120 mmHg is dangerously high. If it occurs with chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical help immediately.
Bottom line: Don’t assume that high blood pressure is “normal for your age.” Regular monitoring and proper medical advice matter at every age.
