Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

If you mean how to wash yellowed or dirty bed pillows safely, the method depends on the pillow filling. Here’s a practical approach for most washable synthetic or polyester pillows.

🛏️ How to clean and whiten pillows

1. Check the care label first.
Make sure the pillow is machine-washable. Memory foam and latex pillows generally should not be put in a washing machine.

2. Pretreat yellow stains.
Mix:

  • 1 cup (240 ml) of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon liquid laundry detergent

Apply lightly to stained areas and gently work it into the fabric.

3. Wash two pillows together.
If the care label permits machine washing, washing two pillows helps keep the load balanced. Use warm water and a normal/gentle cycle according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Use detergent—not household chlorine bleach unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
For white washable fabrics, an oxygen-based laundry whitener can be a safer alternative to chlorine bleach. Follow the product’s label carefully.

5. Rinse thoroughly.
Extra rinsing can help remove detergent residue, which can otherwise leave pillows feeling stiff or cause odors.

6. Dry completely.
Dry according to the care label, and make sure the pillow is completely dry inside before putting a pillowcase back on it. Damp filling can develop unpleasant odors and mold.

🌿 What about making them smell “sweet”?

You don’t need perfume or essential oils. A clean, completely dried pillow should smell fresh naturally. If you use a scented laundry product, use only a small amount and make sure it’s appropriate for bedding.

⚠️ Don’t use viral cleaning mixtures blindly

Avoid mixing bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acids, or other cleaners. Dangerous gases can result. Also, baking soda + vinegar mostly neutralizes each other rather than creating a powerful cleaning solution.

Tip: If a pillow remains yellow, has a persistent odor, has mold, or the filling has become lumpy and degraded, replacing it may be more hygienic than repeatedly trying to whiten it.
