Vitamin D Warning: 4 Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore
Vitamin D is important for bone and muscle health, but too much vitamin D—usually from excessive supplementation—can cause toxicity. The main problem is an abnormally high calcium level in the blood.
4 Symptoms That May Signal Too Much Vitamin D
- Nausea or vomiting
Excess vitamin D can raise calcium levels enough to cause significant digestive symptoms. - Extreme thirst and frequent urination
High calcium can cause dehydration, excessive thirst, and increased urination. - Muscle weakness or unusual fatigue
Weakness and tiredness can occur with vitamin D toxicity. - Confusion or changes in thinking
Severe hypercalcemia can affect the nervous system and cause confusion or other mental changes.
⚠️ Don’t Automatically Stop Prescribed Vitamin D
These symptoms don’t prove that vitamin D is the cause. If you’re taking vitamin D because your doctor diagnosed a deficiency, don’t discontinue treatment without discussing it with them.
The NIH lists 4,000 IU (100 mcg) per day as the tolerable upper intake level for adults from all sources, although doctors may intentionally prescribe higher doses for a limited period to treat deficiency.
Vitamin D toxicity is rare and is generally caused by excessive supplement use rather than normal food intake or sunlight.
