5 Foods That Contain Phytoestrogens

If by “foods rich in estrogen” you mean foods containing phytoestrogens, these are plant compounds that can interact with estrogen receptors. They are not the same as human estrogen and don’t simply raise estrogen levels in everyone.

Five good sources are:

Soybeans and soy foods — tofu, tempeh, edamame, and soy milk are among the richest dietary sources of isoflavones.
Flaxseeds — particularly rich in lignans, a type of phytoestrogen.
Sesame seeds — contain lignans and other compounds with estrogen-like activity.
Chickpeas and other legumes — provide smaller amounts of phytoestrogens along with fiber and protein.
Dried fruits — such as apricots, raisins, and prunes contain lignans, although amounts vary.
Important distinction

Eating these foods doesn’t mean you’re consuming estrogen or that they will necessarily increase your body’s estrogen. Phytoestrogens have much weaker and more complex effects than the body’s own estrogen.

For most people, soy foods, flaxseed, legumes, and other plant foods can be part of a healthy diet. If you’re considering phytoestrogen-rich foods specifically because of menopause symptoms, fertility, low estrogen, or hormone-sensitive cancer, the appropriate choices can be different, so it’s worth discussing your situation with a healthcare professional.
