These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease

Some liver diseases can cause noticeable changes, particularly when liver function has become significantly impaired. But many liver conditions—especially fatty liver disease—can have few or no symptoms in the early stages.

Watch for:

Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) — caused by increased bilirubin.
Swollen abdomen — fluid buildup, called ascites.
Swollen ankles, feet, or legs — edema can occur with advanced liver disease.
Spider-like red blood vessels on the skin (spider angiomas).
Easy bruising or bleeding.
Persistent itching.
Dark urine, particularly when accompanied by jaundice.
Unintentional weight loss or muscle loss.
Unusual fatigue or weakness.
Confusion, difficulty concentrating, or personality changes in advanced liver disease.

Don’t rely on appearance alone

A person can have significant liver disease without any visible signs. Doctors may use medical history, physical examination, blood tests and imaging to determine whether the liver is damaged.

If you develop new yellowing of the eyes/skin, significant abdominal swelling, unexplained bleeding, or confusion, seek medical evaluation promptly.

Bottom line: Visible changes can be clues, but they don’t prove liver disease. Persistent or unexplained symptoms deserve a proper medical evaluation rather than a “liver detox.”
