Choking Alone: What to Do Immediately
If you are currently choking and cannot breathe, speak, or cough forcefully, this is an emergency. Call your local emergency number immediately if you can, then act—don’t wait for someone to arrive.

If you’re alone
Call emergency services. If you can’t speak, keep the line open if possible.
Make a fist and place it slightly above your belly button.
Grasp your fist with your other hand.
Bend over a firm surface, such as the back of a sturdy chair or a countertop.
Drive your upper abdomen inward and upward against the edge of the surface with force.
Repeat until the obstruction comes out or you become unable to continue.

The American Red Cross also recognizes using a firm object such as a chair or railing for self-abdominal thrusts. Avoid sharp edges or unstable objects.

If you can still cough forcefully
Keep coughing. A strong cough can sometimes clear the obstruction.

Don’t do this
Don’t blindly put your fingers down your throat to search for the food. You could push it farther into the airway. Only remove an object if you can clearly see it.

If you become unconscious, whoever finds you should begin CPR and follow emergency-dispatch instructions.

The key message: there isn’t a guaranteed “10-second trick.” The proven emergency response is call for help + self-abdominal thrusts using your hands or a firm surface.
