How to effectively clean ceramic glass cooktops without scratching them

To clean a ceramic glass cooktop without scratching it, the key is to use gentle tools, avoid abrasive cleaners, and remove spills before they harden.

What you’ll need

  • Soft microfiber cloths
  • Non-abrasive cooktop cleaner (made for glass-ceramic surfaces)
  • Cooktop scraper with a razor blade designed for glass cooktops (for stubborn residue)
  • Warm water
  • Soft sponge or non-scratch pad

Step-by-step cleaning method

  1. Let the cooktop cool completely
    • Never clean a hot surface with cold water or a wet cloth, as sudden temperature changes can damage the glass.
  2. Wipe away loose debris
    • Use a dry microfiber cloth to remove crumbs and grit that could scratch the surface.
  3. Clean everyday spills
    • Apply a small amount of ceramic cooktop cleaner.
    • Gently rub with a microfiber cloth using circular motions.
    • Wipe away residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a soft towel.
  4. Remove burned-on food
    • Hold a cooktop scraper at a low angle (about 30–45 degrees).
    • Gently lift the residue—do not dig into the glass.
    • Follow with cooktop cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
  5. Polish the surface
    • Buff with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove streaks and restore shine.

Avoid these, as they can scratch or damage the finish:

  • Steel wool or abrasive scrubbers
  • Scouring powders
  • Rough sponges
  • Knife blades or improvised scrapers
  • Bleach or harsh oven cleaners
  • Dragging heavy cookware across the surface

Helpful prevention tips

  • Wipe spills soon after cooking, especially sugar, syrup, or melted plastic, which can permanently damage the glass.
  • Lift pots and pans instead of sliding them.
  • Keep the bottom of cookware clean and smooth.

For stubborn stains like white mineral marks, burnt sugar, or cloudy haze, the cleaning approach is slightly different.
