Back pain? It’s over with these 4 stretches…Make it a habit!

🧘 Back Pain? These 4 Gentle Stretches May Help

If you have uncomplicated, nonspecific low-back pain, regular gentle movement can help reduce stiffness and improve mobility. Stretching isn’t a guaranteed cure, though, and the best exercises depend on the cause of the pain. (nhs.uk)

1. 🐈 Knee-to-chest stretch

Lie on your back with your knees bent. Slowly bring one knee toward your chest and hold it gently, then switch sides. Avoid forcing the movement.

2. 🐈‍⬛ Cat-cow stretch

Start on your hands and knees. Slowly alternate between gently arching your back and rounding it, moving within a comfortable range.

3. 🦵 Hamstring stretch

Lie on your back and raise one leg while keeping the other bent. Gently straighten the raised leg until you feel a mild stretch along the back of your thigh.

4. 🌿 Child’s pose

From a kneeling position, slowly sit your hips back toward your heels and reach your arms forward. Only go as far as feels comfortable.

How to make it a habit

Try 5–10 minutes of gentle movement once or twice a day, rather than forcing a long stretching session. Stop if an exercise significantly increases your pain. Staying generally active is usually preferable to prolonged bed rest. (nhs.uk)

🚨 When stretching isn’t the answer

Seek urgent medical attention for back pain accompanied by weakness or numbness in both legs, numbness around the genitals or anus, difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels, or other sudden neurological symptoms. (nhs.uk)

Also get medical advice if pain follows a significant injury, is accompanied by fever or unexplained weight loss, or isn’t improving.

Bottom line: Make gentle movement a habit, but don’t assume every type of back pain can be fixed with stretching. Persistent or severe pain deserves an appropriate medical assessment.
