Does drinking water in the morning and after waking up have a beneficial effect on your overall well-being?

Yes. Drinking water after waking can be a healthy habit, mainly because it contributes to your overall hydration. But there is nothing uniquely “detoxifying” or magical about drinking water first thing in the morning.

Potential benefits

  • Rehydrates you after the overnight period and helps replace normal fluid losses.
  • Supports normal brain and physical function. Dehydration can contribute to tiredness, dizziness, headache, and difficulty concentrating. (King’s College Hospital)
  • May help prevent constipation when adequate fluid intake is combined with enough fiber and activity. (Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust)
  • Supports normal kidney function and helps the body eliminate waste. (King’s College Hospital)
  • Can be a useful routine, especially for older adults, who may have a reduced sense of thirst and therefore be more prone to dehydration. (Sussex ICS)

How much?

Rather than forcing a large amount immediately after waking, drink regularly throughout the day. The NHS gives 6–8 cups or glasses of fluid per day as a general guide, with higher needs in hot weather, during exercise, or when ill. (nhs.uk)

Important: People who have been prescribed a fluid restriction because of heart, kidney, or another medical condition should follow their clinician’s specific advice rather than deliberately increasing water intake. (Plymouth Hospitals NHS)

Bottom line: A glass of water after waking is perfectly reasonable and can contribute to good hydration, but the total amount and regularity of fluid intake throughout the day matter more than the exact time you drink it.
