Everyone has made this mistake. What is the normal bl00d pressure for each age?

The key point is that normal blood pressure does not increase simply because you get older. For adults, current U.S. guidelines use the same normal category across age groups. (professional.heart.org)

🩺 What is normal blood pressure by age?

Age Normal blood pressure
18–39 Below 120/80 mmHg
40–59 Below 120/80 mmHg
60–79 Below 120/80 mmHg
80+ Below 120/80 mmHg can still be normal, though treatment goals may be individualized

For adults, the 2025 AHA/ACC guideline defines:

  • Normal: below 120/80
  • Elevated: 120–129 and below 80
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130–139 or 80–89
  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher or 90 or higher (professional.heart.org)

👶 What about children?

Children are different. For those under 13, blood pressure is interpreted according to age, sex, and height, rather than using the adult 120/80 cutoff. Adolescents 13 and older are generally assessed using adult thresholds. (www.heart.org)

⚠️ One reading doesn’t tell the whole story

Blood pressure naturally changes throughout the day. A consistently elevated average is more meaningful than one unusual reading, so measurements should be taken correctly and repeated when necessary.

A reading above 180/120 mmHg is considered severely high. If it occurs with chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, numbness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical care immediately. (American Heart Association)

Bottom line: Don’t assume that 140/90 is “normal for an older person.” Healthy blood pressure remains important at every adult age.
