How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

What people call “inner ear crystals” is usually a condition called Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. It happens when tiny calcium particles (otoconia) shift into the wrong part of the inner ear, confusing your balance system and triggering brief spinning sensations (vertigo), especially when you move your head.

The good news: it’s often treatable with specific head movements, not medication.

Most effective treatment: repositioning maneuvers

The most common is the Epley maneuver, which helps move the crystals back where they belong.

Epley maneuver (for RIGHT ear problem)

  1. Sit on a bed, turn your head 45° to the right
  2. Quickly lie back with your head slightly hanging off the bed
→ stay 30–60 seconds (or until dizziness stops)
  3. Turn your head 90° to the left (without lifting it)
    → stay 30–60 seconds
  4. Roll your body onto your left side
→ your face should point slightly downward
    → stay 30–60 seconds
  5. Slowly sit up

If the left ear is affected, you do the same steps in reverse.

Many people feel improvement within 1–3 treatments, sometimes immediately.

Other helpful maneuvers

Depending on which canal is affected, doctors may use:

  • Semont maneuver
  • Brandt–Daroff exercises

What helps reduce vertigo episodes

  • Move slowly when getting out of bed
  • Avoid sudden head tilts for a few days
  • Sleep slightly elevated (extra pillow)
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol (can worsen balance signals)

When to see a doctor

Get medical help if:

  • Vertigo lasts more than a few minutes without position change
  • You have weakness, slurred speech, severe headache, or double vision
  • Hearing loss or ringing in one ear develops
  • Symptoms keep coming back despite maneuvers

If you want, tell me what triggers your dizziness (turning in bed, looking up, etc.), and I can help figure out whether it really matches BPPV and which side/ear is likely affected.
