Claims like “Put 2 drops in your ear and you will hear like before” or “recover your hearing” are not supported by scientific evidence. There is no ear drop that can reliably restore hearing loss, and such claims are often misleading.
What ear drops can help with depends on the cause:
- Earwax buildup: Certain over-the-counter wax-softening drops may help loosen wax, but hearing usually improves only if wax was the cause.
- Outer ear infection (“swimmer’s ear”): Prescription antibiotic or antiseptic ear drops may treat the infection.
- Dry, itchy ear canals: Some doctor-recommended moisturizing drops can relieve irritation.
Ear drops do not reverse:
- Age-related hearing loss
- Noise-induced hearing loss
- Most inner ear disorders
- Nerve-related hearing loss
Be cautious
- Do not put oils, hydrogen peroxide, garlic, or other home remedies into your ear unless you know your eardrum is intact and a healthcare professional has advised it.
- If you have a perforated eardrum, ear drainage, severe pain, or have had ear surgery, some ear drops can be harmful.

Get prompt medical attention if you experience:
- Sudden hearing loss in one or both ears
- Severe ear pain, bleeding, or discharge
- Hearing loss with dizziness or facial weakness
Sudden hearing loss is a medical emergency because treatment is most effective when started as soon as possible.
If your hearing has gradually worsened, a hearing test can identify the cause and whether treatments such as wax removal, medication, hearing aids, or other interventions are appropriate.
